Looking to expand your business or advance your career? Do not overlook the power of networking.

In many cases, what sets you apart from others is “not what you know, but who you know”. To really get ahead, you must expand your network. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your networking efforts:

1. Plan three interesting talking points. Are you a bit shy? Before you begin actively networking, it is a good idea to develop three potential talking points. This will help you to feel more comfortable and engaged in your conversations as you meet new people.

2. Go online. It is possible to network without even leaving your office. LinkedIn is a great way to connect with new people online. Since you can see their interests, experiences and work history it is easy to begin a conversation. When you request to connect with someone, be sure to add a personal note.

3. Keep track of who you meet. Although social networking sites are great, meeting people face to face is still the best way to network. It is more personal, and people are likely to remember you better. Of course, you must remember details about them (and who they know) as well. Use a CRM or database system to keep notes and remind you of your next steps” if you do not have a CRM system, you can acquire one free license here.

4. Follow Up. For networking to be truly effective, you must keep in touch – just like in any relationship. Sending emails, thank-you notes, birthday cards and interesting articles are all great ways to maintain your connection. To “catch up” with your contacts suggest that you meet in person on occasion. Also, find ways to relate to people on a more personal level other than business.

5. Be Generous. Instead of just thinking about what others can do for you, think of how you can genuinely help others. You want to be the one that people come to when they need something. Your mindset should be to give, give and give.

These tips, along with some confidence and practice, will help put you on the path to making great connections!
